New power for the PROMOS data centre – IBM server replacement imminent
With the upcoming server replacement, PROMOS is switching to the new POWER10 generation from IBM. Compared to the previous IBM POWER9, the new 10 generation offers far-reaching innovations for greater energy efficiency as well as higher performance. The new IBM P10 series was developed to meet the requirements of customers in the area of hybrid cloud computing. Additional hardware-supported security functions have also been integrated. This results in very specific benefits for our customers.[1]
Increased reliability
IBM and other hardware manufacturers generally specify an average MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) for servers of five years. The Mean Time Between Failure is an important measure of the reliability of systems and calculates the average time a system or component is in operation before a failure. Volker Schulz, Chief Information Officer at PROMOS, explains: “The reliability of our systems is the be-all and end-all for us and our customers. For this reason, we adhere very closely to the MTBF of five years recommended by IBM. In this way, we minimise the likelihood of failures. In addition, the decision to opt for the significantly higher performance POWER10 generation is a strategic precursor for future customer projects.”

Improved performance and scalability
The new POWER10 servers are designed to improve performance and scalability by up to 50 per cent compared to the previous generation. The IBM POWER10 series is therefore considered by many experts to be THE ideal system architecture for operating SAP S/4HANA® systems. “A growing proportion of our customers are now relying on SAP S/4HANA® in the ERP context. The decision in favour of the future-oriented S/4HANA® technology offers our customers decisive advantages in terms of performance and efficiency, but at the same time places higher demands on the hardware in terms of processor performance (CPU) and main memory (RAM) utilisation. The new IBM POWER10 servers form the powerful basis for the operation and improved scalability of the systems.” explains Schulz, adding: “At the same time, the switch to POWER10 is a long-term decision, as the switch to S/4HANA® is still to come for many of our customers and we are therefore laying an important foundation for the future today. The switch to the new POWER10 generation is also groundbreaking for us in light of the growing challenges in the area of AI.”
Summary
With the new IBM POWER10 generation, IBM promises a near 100 per cent reliability, the reduction of unplanned business interruptions to a minimum, increased sustainability thanks to improved end-user application performance and better AI capability through higher speeds.[2] Schulz concludes: “We are very proud to be able to offer our customers even greater flexibility and performance in daily operations with the switch to the new generation and are also looking forward to all upcoming projects, for which we are now ideally equipped.”
