ESG – what is it and when is mandatory reporting coming?
ESG stands for environmental, social and governance. These three criteria form the basis for assessing the sustainability and responsibility efforts of a company, authority or public organisation. With the implementation of a corresponding EU directive in German law, ESG reporting will gradually become mandatory for almost all companies by the beginning of 2026. This reporting is a tool that companies use to measure, monitor and disclose their performance in the relevant areas. It covers topics such as CO2 emissions, social responsibility towards employees and communities and the integrity of corporate governance. In addition to simply fulfilling legal requirements, it helps to provide a transparent representation of companies’ sustainability performance and thus fulfil their ambitions with regard to their environmental and social footprint.
